Well Put

An old friend from high school writes in his blog:

“Core values.” What the fuck are those? There’s no such thing as a value strata, in which other values radiate out from a chocolatey center of values. If one of your values is “don’t steal,” it’s pointless to have “don’t steal dildos on Tuesday” as a secondary value. Either you have values, or you don’t. Fuck “core values” down to its very … core.

As someone who is consciously, deliberately trying to show the world one can be moral and value-centered without any kind of religious crutch, I like this a lot. It’s a subject I’ve had cause to think on a lot lately, so Geoff’s post was well timed. Chewy.

  1. As we discussed at Balticon, in part, it’s the short and succinct truisms that often hit home the most powerfully. Chewy, indeed.
