In The Cross Hairs

Well. Twice now, in the course of just a few months, my web site has been invaded by crackers. First time, I left the door open to spambots by foolishly not upgrading my scripts quickly enough… learn from that, my friends, and always upgrade when an upgrade is available!

This time, however, it was a nice index file switcheroo — deleted all existing index.fu files and replaced ‘em with the cracker’s own delightful page. Many thanks to Bishop Eddie Haynes for letting me know about the issue via Twitter; also thanks to James and Colin for e-mailing me about it.

Took me about ten minutes to set everything right again. But it’s really making me wonder. Have I reached some kind of level of fame / notoriety on the Interwebs that makes me a target now? If so, as much as I’d like to think it’s a result of my podcasting, my writing, and so on, it’s far more likely I’m in the cross hairs as a result of my association with much more web-famous Internet sites and personalities.

Will this keep happening? Gotta wonder. Not only could someone decide to get nasty with me just because of my day job, heck, I could piss someone off in that day job and not even know it. Lovely. Of course, it’s much more likely that I was the random victim of some dicktard’s bot… but this never used to happen.

A little paranoia, maybe… but there it is. I’m going to continue on like I always have, in any event. Otherwise, as you know, the terrorists win.

It certainly sucks Matt — but remember, don’t negotiate with terrorists! :) Good luck, chances are it’s just a random bot finder.
