A Peek At Pilgrimage

Yvonne Blake, a character from "Pilgrimage" This is Yvonne Blake, as visualized with the help of a composite illustration program called FACES. Yvonne is a minor character with a big impact on several other characters in the follow-up novel to “Brave Men Run,” “Pilgrimage.”

I was just getting ready to write the piece of the book that includes her, and I needed to know her a little better. I created this image, which helped. Her hair is darker, longer, and more straight in my mind, but my version of the software has limited templates. Figure she’s wearing black jeans, a tee-shirt, and a plain denim jacket.

In any event, I thought I would share her with you!

I’m not sure if I’m attracted to her or not – she a bit devious, should be an interesting character. I do something similar with regards characters; I use google images to find people that fit the idea in my head – definitely helps give a solid feel for the character.

I’ve tried to use photographs, but for some reason my brain stops. I find myself blocked by the idea that the person in the photograph is already a real person! I need someone just far enough removed from real, but still realistic.

That’s why FACES is so cool (for me)… you literally flip through different facial elements like eyes, noses, lips, and so on, and mix and match until the combination clicks and you say, “There’s my character!”

She reminds me of Linda Fiorentino. That is not a bad thing. This FACES thing is a super cool idea – I’ll have to give it a shot – I can imagine how much it helps to have such an accurate idea of the character’s looks.

I can kinda see Linda Fiorentino… or maybe Sandra Berhardt?

FACES is super-cool. I wish they had an affiliate program! ;-)

What a great idea to use Faces. I also like knowing what your character really looks like. Are you thinking of including pics of characters in the book?
