A little over a month ago, I asked you folks a question regarding electronic distribution of my work. I wanted to know: is it okay for me to restrict the way my audience consumes my work because of my own opposition to digital rights management? Specifically, I wondered if I should release “Brave Men Run — A Novel of the Sovereign Era” in Amazon Kindle and iPhone / iPod Touch e-book formats.
Most people said, “Go for it.” So I have.
You can now purchase “Brave Men Run” for your Amazon Kindle ($5.00) or iPhone / iPod Touch ($4.99.) Both of these formats will only play on their dedicated devices… and of course, both are optimized to work very well on their respective platforms. The iPhone / iPod Touch edition is especially nifty, taking near-full advantage of the user interface.
Is there a pragmatic angle to my making these platform-specific versions of “Brave Men Run” available? Absolutely! I would love to support myself and my wife solely on my creative endeavors. Royalties for the iPhone / Touch and Kindle editions are very favorable. There are 12 million iPhone users and a quarter million Kindles have sold so far. If even one percent of one percent of those people purchased “Brave Men Run,” my gross would rival what I make in eight months at my day job. Not bad at all.
What can you do? No, there’s not going to be any organzied “rush on the Apple App Store,” or anything like that. But if you own an iPhone or iPod Touch, consider purchasing “Brave Men Run.” Numbers suggest that fewer of you own a Kindle, but if you do… you know what to do.
Alternately, write a review of the book on its page in the iTunes Apple App Store. You can also write a review for the Kindle edition even if you don’t own a Kindle. If you’ve read the book in another form or listened to the podcast, you can write a review!
Of course, if you want a platform-independent, DRM-free edition of the book, you can still pay whatever you like (recommended price $5.00) for the multiple-format e-book edition. And don’t think for a minute that I’m discouraging you from owning a paperback copy of “Brave Men Run” with all my talk of the intangible media!
So that’s the news, coupled with a big chunk of unashamed shilling. I confess I’m excited by the potential. Thanks for your support!
