Here’s what happened:
When I was a young teen, I used to stay up very late in the summer months. I’d put on headphones and listen to 94.7 FM, which back then was KMET, a rock station. From ten at night until two in the morning on weeknights, I’d listen to Jim Ladd’s show, trip out on his very well-crafted extended sets, and write poetry.
Teen poetry… which means lots of passion, unfocused if righteous anger, angst, and a preoccupation with morbidity. Awwww yeah.
I don’t know how or why, but I wrote nearly every one of these poems using a felt tip pen with purple ink. I gave the poems a pretentious name… something like “Prose from the Purple Parchment,” or some such. Yep, I was fourteen!
I wrote almost five hundred poems. And because I save stuff out of the misplaced idea that I’ll be glad one day that I did… I still have damn near every one of them.
So… I’m sharing them. With you. On camera. For the first time, in most cases, for my teen-aged self would have been mortified had anyone actually read these things. Hah! I’m getting the last laugh. On myself!
Every week or so, I’ll present a new episode of the simply named but search-engine friendly “Teen Poetry.” Each episode will feature a single poem, written by my fourteen-year-old self and read by my forty one-year-old self. I’ll attempt to read each poem as they are written… which means you can expect lots of overly-dramatic, ultra-critical and super-serious prose that is, quite literally, in this case… purple.
I’ve created a YouTube channel for Teen Poetry, and you would do me a great favor if you would go there and subscribe. While you’re there, check out the debut episode, rate it, comment it up, and favorite it, too! I’m not ashamed to say that I think Teen Poetry has the potential to be one of those really stupid things on YouTube that takes the Internet by storm… but I can’t do it without you, don’tcha know.
Teen Poetry’s main home will be this site — the show notes for each episode will include the featured poem all written out so you can read along. I’ll also have downloadable episodes in WMV, M4V, AVI and 3GP formats, so you can take Teen Poetry with you on your portable media device or phone. You’ll thank me for that, I swear.
So dig Teen Poetry! No, I mean literally, please Digg Teen Poetry, and add it to your StumbleUpon, and Delicious bookmarks, and Twitter about it, and embed episodes in your own blog, and generally spread the word! Who doesn’t like awful Teen Poetry read by a guy almost thirty years removed from when he wrote the stuff? C’mon! I’m being shameless, here.
And just in case you missed it:

I LOVE it!!! It’s genius!! I hope it goes viral! It would be really cool if a lot of people dug into their closets pulled their old poetry out and joined you. I’ve been wondering for the longest time if you still had “The Purple Parchment” and thought about suggesting that you publish it in some way, but this is great! I’ll tell everyone I know. Looking forward to hearing
“The Blade” ha-ha!

I can’t believe you actually remember the name of one of those poems… reading them now, they’re pretty much all new to me!
Stay tuned, Dave… I’m sure “The Blade” will pop up eventually…
Hope you’re doing well!
