Inaugural Reader Hype Thread

Blogs, including this one, are usually about what’s going on in the life of the blogger… what they’re working on, what they saw, what they’re thinking, what they like, blah blah blah me me me. However, there are several bloggers who, now and then, turn the tables and ask the readers to share about themselves.

Starting with this post, every month I’ll do something similar. This is your opportunity to let the other readers of this blog know about your current project, interest, cause, passion… whatever it is that’s going on in your life in the month of March that you want to share with others.

Now, Scribtotum doesn’t have the numbers (we’re talking orders of magnitude, here) that, say, John Scalzi or Warren Ellis pull in… but even so, it’s likely that there are folks who read this blog who have yet to be exposed to your works. Not only that, since you all read this blog, it’s likely you have common interests. Targeted promotion to a fresh audience is a good thing, yes? So get to it — hype it up in the comments. I’m keen to know what’s up in your world.

What a great idea, Matt. I am really excited right now because over the last year I’ve been trying to think of ways to get more exposure for our little literary arts zine, eMuse. Last week, I finally crawled out from under the rock holding me back and hooked up a Twitter account for the zine. It has proved beneficial in so many ways, opening up contacts with writers, poets and artists galore. Our submissions are up, we are appealing to a wider audience and we’ve actually got some great authors offering us their time for interviews.

It’s a small project now, but I have such big plans for the future. I really feel like the poor economy is pushing a lot of us as artists, writers, musicians–creators overall, to return full force to our craft and throw all caution to the wind. It’s like we have nothing left to lose, so why not put ourselves out there body, mind and soul.

The internet has changed everything and we are all part of a monumental movement… only instead of beatniks, they’ll call us netniks or something kooky like that.

  2. Hi Matt/MS community,

Perhaps not quite what you had in mind, but since you used the words “cause” and “passion”…I’d like to hype up one of my main ones – Human Rights – knowing that smart web communities like this one can normally be counted on to do the right thing. There is a lot of excitement about the early days of the Obama administration, and at a time when your new President has announced the impending closure of Guantanamo, I’d like to point your readers towards adding their support to Amnesty International. Guantanamo is the tip of a nasty international iceberg of human rights issues – to add your voice to those who object, please visit http://www.amnesty.org, and support the organisation and their campaigns.

And if anyone would like to visit my humble blog, please feel free!

Thanks for the note, Stuart — are there any events or particular pushes Amnesty is promoting this month?

I was an Amnesty International member in the past (economics have forced me to suspend my charitable contributions for the moment.) I was even at the Conspiracy of Hope mega-concert at what was then the Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles in 1986.

  3. Sorry – I’m a tech halfwit – my blog is at http://stuartb67.blogspot.com/

But visit Amnesty first, that’s much more important!

Sorry about that. I knew I forgot something. Our new issue comes out on Sunday, March 15. :)

  5. Thanks for publishing Matt. Amnesty always has a list of actions to take on behalf of individuals held or restricted in various countries because of their political views (or gender or race etc). One of their key wider campaigns at the moment is “100 days”, calling on the US President to take a range of actions on human rights in his first 100 days in office. Their “take action” page is here:
    http://www.amnesty.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=11478

For readers in the UK, it’s worth noting that Amnesty membership only costs £3 per month. They are also a recognised charity for “pay as you earn” donations, if your employer operates the scheme – you can donate from your gross salary, so that Amnesty receive the full sum but it costs you less as the deduction is made before tax.

Lastly, since I’m an idiot and left the links out last time, my blog locations:
http://stuartb67.blogspot.com/ (Music and Randomness, my blog about music, podcasts and anything else that takes my fancy)
http://stuartb67-ife.blogspot.com/ (Input From Everywhere, my newly-started business blog)

Thanks again for the promo space Matt – look forward to the BMR follow-up!

Nice idea. I just followed @eMuseZine and visited http://stuartb67.blogspot.com/ (big Ani diF fan, btw).

I’ve been working on http://wordpress.steveweddle.com and http://blogspot.steveweddle.com and http://synthasite.steveweddle.com in trying to find one that suits my idea of letting people read some of my novel for free. Still not sure which site I like best.

So glad to see an active community of readers and writers on the blogs and on Twitter.

Thanks and keep up the good work,
    Steve
