Hitching Up The Blatant Commercialism Bandwagon!
Hey everybody! It’s my understanding that lots of folks do a crapload of shopping the day after Thanksgiving… optimistically called Black Friday by the retail industry because their balance sheets trend toward the black thanks to all the happy customers.
Will that be the case this year, what with the economy being like it is? Retailers hope so… and online retailers are no different!
Amazon.com is promoting a ton of deals and discounts on Black Friday. You probably know they’re not just for books, music and movies these days — they carry software, electronics, toys, clothing, housewares… in fact, rather than braving the traffic and the crazed shopping mall crowds, why not do Black Friday in your jammies?
Amazon also does this thing called Gold Box, where they have deep-discount deals every day. On Black Friday, they’ll be doing it every hour! Check out Gold Box while you’re at Amazon.com — who knows what you’ll find?
What’s that you say? You’re thinking of little ol’ me this holiday season? Well, that’s so kind of you! Allow me to direct your thoughts to my own Amazon Wish List… which also includes things my dear wife would appreciate — don’t think I’m all about the selfishness (he says after doing an entire affiliate marketing post!)
Enjoy, people! Shop happy!
Oh, did I mention I’m an Amazon affiliate, so when you shop Amazon from the links on this page, I make a small (very small — like 4%) commission on whatever you buy. It doesn’t add anything to what you actually pay for stuff, and it helps me out a little. So thanks!
Announcing Short Stories For Sale
Late last night, I launched something I’ve been intending to do for a couple of months. Now that I’m depending entirely on myself (and the EDD) for income, I have the time for projects like this!
Periodically, I’ll release a short story for sale in multiple formats:
- A zipped bundle of five DRM-free e-book formats — $0.99
- Amazon Kindle e-book — $0.99
- iPhone / iPod Touch e-book — $0.99
- Signed and numbered chapbook in a limited edition of 100 — $10.00 postage paid in the USA (Shipping extra outside the USA)
The first one is available now: “Reggie vs. Kaiju Storm Chimera Wolf,” my giant monster / unfinished business / love triangle mashup that first appeared in podcast form last year on Escape Pod.
The chapbook edition includes an essay written specifically for that edition, ““Beach Cities and Giant Monsters: The Path to Reggie,” not included in the e-book editions — get the chapbook and be one of only a hundred people to read it!
I’m excited by the old-school (hand-made limited chapbooks!) / new school (e-books!) approach of this experiment. I’m also keen to expose my audience to the range of my fiction — you can expect fantasy, horror, science fiction and not a little bit of straight-up “literary” fiction in the months to come… though I’m loathe to label any of it. We’ll see how it goes — you’ll let me know every time you spend a dollar or ten on these stories!
Start with “Reggie vs. Kaiju Storm Chimera Wolf.”
Thanks!
“Reggie vs. Kaiju Storm Chimera Wolf” Chapbook Limited Edition
Each Copy Made Just For You
When you order the chapbook edition of the short story “Reggie vs. Kaiju Storm Chimera Wolf,” I personally print, fold, staple, number and autograph each chapbook when they’re ordered. I put them in an envelope, and I take them to the post office. These are not mass-produced… they’re Matt produced!
The chapbook is limited to 100 signed and numbered hand-made copies. When these sell out, they’re gone forever… so act fast!
Extra Content
The signed and numbered limited chapbook includes an essay written specifically for this edition: “Beach Cities and Giant Monsters: The Path to Reggie.” This essay is not included in the ebook bundle, Amazon Kindle or iPhone / iPod Touch editions of this story. Study On Young People’s Use Of New Media and Social Networking Released
Courtesy of BoingBoing: The Digital Youth Project has just released the results of a three year, interdisciplinary study on how young people use online technology. As someone keenly interested in online technology but many calendar years past being a youth, this is very relevant to me.
The entire study will be released as a printed book called “Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out: Living and Learning with New Media” soon. Fortunately, you can download and read a summary and a white paper in pdf format, and you can read the entire book online for free. It’s all released on a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial 3.0 license.
I want to read the entire book, right now, but I don’t want to have to look at a website to do it. Maybe you don’t want to, either. So I’ve created two downloadable versions of “Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out: Living and Learning with New Media” in Open Document and Adobe Acrobat formats:
- Download “Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out: Living and Learning with New Media” (.odt)
- Download “Hanging Out, Messing Around, Geeking Out: Living and Learning with New Media” (.pdf)
Once I’ve read it, I’ll post my impressions and take-aways. I hope anyone interested in the future of new media and society reads it, too!
