All Things Considered

What’s It All About?
This started during a PIGBAT rehearsal. I was messing around way up the neck of my bass, a rough, machine-gun attack of harmonics. A week later, I came back with words, and together with guitarist Kris Shine and drummer Jon Strunk, we had a strange mixture of punk rock speed and grunge posturing called “All Things Considered.”
The lyrics are inspired by an extended set of particularly bad news on the National Public Radio program from which the song gets its name. This is one of the very few outright political songs I’ve ever written.
This recording is from one of the last rehearsals of the original line-up of PIGBAT. I’m playing bass and singing.
Lyrics:
Mankind on the firing line
Just like every other time
Each must for themselves decide
“Justified” or genocide
Words can trick and words can quicken
Classify the life you’re livin’
Call you saint or call you heathen
Make decisions or incisions
Satisfied with strife
It’s our lot in life
And I
Cry
Why
And they reply with lies
History remains the same
Only weapons ever change
And the increments of pain
Not the targets or the blame
Down we go, hit the ground
Blood by ounce and flesh by pound
Justice nowhere to be found
And dissent is not allowed
