What’s It All About?

In the summer of 1991 I loaned my truck to my girlfriend so that she could go to a friend’s party, about an hour away from where I was living in San Clemente. She promised to return by the time I was off that night.

I didn’t see her until just after the sun came up. It was the beginning of the end for us… but, as they say, I got a good song out of it!

The song was a staple of my solo acoustic sets, but it wasn’t until I played it for my fellow band members in Running Erin that the song really came alive as something of a “hit” for us.

Both versions with Running Erin feature the original line-up: Gary Fitch on guitar, Tony Dare on drums, Erin Foster on vocals, and myself on bass and vocals. The first, a music video, was a 2000 joint production between Running Erin and Not Afraid! Productions, filmed on the Universal Studios Hollywood back lot, the “Warrior Day” festival at CSU Stanislaus, and Linda’s Doll Hut in Anaheim, California. The second version represented here is a live performance at a bar in Redondo Beach, California.

The third version is solo acoustic, recorded direct to digital, some years later. Both MP3 versions feature no overdubs or effects.

Lyrics:

“Another Day” by Matthew Wayne Selznick
Now it’s getting late
I am all alone
Talkin’ to myself about the silence
Of the telephone

I may be a fool
Sittin’ wondering
I can hear you say
You got no cause to be
Worrying

Still I’m thinking, thinking
Words that I had said
How the meaning might have
Turned once they settled
In your head

Did I speak too freely?
Have I scared you off?
You’re out and about
I’m just waiting and
Feeling lost

Another day
Gone away
So much to say
Slipped away

Close my eyes and jealous pictures parade by
You without me equals you out with some other guy
You deserve my trust I try, I try, I try

But another day
Has gone by
And I try
Hard not to cry

Now it’s later still
Climb in that empty bed
I try to cheer up
Thinkin’ ’bout the things we did and
What we’d said

You’re so far away
Wrapped up in your life
I must remember
You’re my girl, I’m your man
But you sure ain’t my wife

So I’ll go to sleep
While you’re out
Doin’ your thing
In my dreams, maybe
I’ll hear that telephone ringing
