What’s It All About?
It’s hard to believe I was twenty years old when I wrote this song… and it survived to be a staple of both Running Erin’s and my own solo sets for two decades.
“Katrina” was a real person. Twenty years of hindsight tells me she probably didn’t deserve my simplistic depiction… there was a lot more to her than a woman who recreated herself with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.
The first version of the song presented here is live, solo acoustic. The second — what I consider the definitive version — is with the band Running Erin, also live. The third, most recent version is solo acoustic, live direct to hard drive with no overdubs or effects.
Lyrics:
Now Katrina waltzes in
Flash a smile, drink a beer
“Hello,” and “I hope you like my dress”
Yellow eyes stare back
Some pretend to offer kindness
Most just look to see what they can get
Don’t think that she’s not that kind of girl
‘Cause she is
Impressions made at first can never last
She drops compliments
Greedy hands rush in to snatch
“I have always loved the way you laugh”
Thin-boned fingers trace the contours of her silky form
Shadowed notions have no purpose here
We have seen her
She’s in the bathroom, not alone
No one misses her
Until they’re lonely on the phone
We have seen her
And some have seen more than the rest
And she wears
A bedwrinkle dress
