What’s It All About?
Sometimes there really isn’t much to analyze..!
This is a simple country ballad in the style of Hank Williams, Sr. or, dare I presume, Merle Haggard. It feels good on the throat to sing, the chords are simple and pure, and the rhymes are easy and comfortable.
Not the deepest song I’ve ever written… and it wasn’t supposed to be!
The version presented here was recorded live direct to hard drive with no overdubs or effects. I’m playing guitar and singing.
Lyrics:
Give another name
To happiness
For another’s claimed
Your sweet caress
Now that I really know
What this word means
I would rather call
It misery
Give another name
To tenderness
Now that I have seen
The truth of it
All the ways you lied
And all your schemes
I am left alone
In disbelief
Love’s the truest word
It’s what they say
It’s what I’d heard
I think they speak
Another language
Different from the one I’ve learned
Teach that other man
As you’ve taught me
You do what you can
To make him bleed
It’s what you do best
That ugly game
And honey, don’t come back
For I know your name
So honey don’t come back
Now I know your name
