Sonitotum Episode Seven - Bass Therapy
This particular episode is not safe for work. Contains profanity, letting-off-steam, and sloppy musicianship.
The first Sonitotum in more than two months comes about after a generally rotten day. Rather than whine too much about about the specifics, I decide to relieve my frustrations by playing bass (including fragments of two songs co-written with Theresa Copell and Steven D. Harvey, respectively), talking about bass, touching on (ha ha) the bass guitar / sex connection, and singing a few old songs written on the bass: “1991,” “In The Afternoon,” and “Whiskey Razor.”
It’s bass therapy, and it’s not pretty.
After the catharsis is out of the way, I run through some of what’s been up over the last two months.

Hi Matt, I actually enjoyed this episode. Not often people are willing to put raw creativity out in the open.
And it was a cool come back to all of those e-mails that went on this past weekend.
Glad you were able to pull yourself out of the funk and feel better it great the healing power of music.
Mr. Selznick…it’s been too long. Got a real kick outta your podacast. You popped my podcast cherry…OW! But I feel…dfferent…somehow. Had no idea you were such a great bass player. Your style reminds me of Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes.
Saw Dave Rayburn last night and I asked him about you and he told me to check out your pages. A lot has happened to you since your newsleter days…my, how you have progressed! I liked “1991″ and the ol’ Selznick grit in the voice. Slow down on the vulgarity, though, futhermucker. BTW, thanks for getting me the job back in the Borders “daze”. I am no longer in their employ and somewhat the better for it. I blow the dust off of “Hundred Seller” every now and then when I’m in that Selznick kinda mood. It’s still my favorite of your CDs. You really should consider putting together another band…I remember when I went out to see you perform in…hmmm…was it Santa Monica? West Hollywood? I don’t remember but I know I enjoyed the show. You had a band then. With a hot chick in it. Well…I just wanted to check in and say hi. I would like to be your friend on MySpace and vicey versey. Glad that bass wrasslin’ is a fountain of youth for ya. Hope all is well in Hesperia…Ciao fer now.

I didn’t get a chance to listen to this ep. until today. Again love the mix of music and the sharing of your personal experiences that makes podcasting so great.
I am not a musician or even musically savvy, but I really liked the end of the song in 1991 when you delay the vocal so it follows after the bass riff. “I just want to be alone…”
And yes, it was great to hear the transformation in your voice as the music improved your mood.
