What’s It All About?

This is the first track from my album, “Anyman: The John Smith E.P.” This project was a collaborative effort between myself and author J.C. Hutchins and part of the campaign to promote the publication of J.C.’s novel, “7th Son: Descent.” The idea was that each track of the record would be presented as if it was written and performed by John Smith, one of the characters in the book.

For this song, J.C. Hutchins asked that it be about trying to understand the inconsistent personality of a lover. He wanted piss and vinegar exasperation; to make it clear John Smith really wanted to figure this person out, but she was an emotional moving target.

Personally, I have one relationship in my past that fits this to a tee, so that mindset was easy to get into once I spent some unpleasant time in the mental way-back machine. At the same time, we get another hint of John Smith’s personality, at least when it comes to women — the first verses show us John living a day-to-day life with little variation, until she comes along. Is his spontaneous involvement with this woman at least initially little more than a response to being lonely and bored?

Lyrics:

Unscrew You” by Matthew Wayne Selznick and J.C. Hutchins
I remember that day
Just like it was yesterday
Maybe that’s because it was just like
The day that came before

That’s when you showed up but
I was not expecting guests
You smiled and said it came down to right and East
Or left and West

I made my own decision
And I took you in my arms
Now I haven’t got the slightest clue
Where the girl I knew has gone

I wanna unscrew you
I wanna get inside your
Get inside your head
Unscrew you
Instead of making love
Make some sense instead

Every branch is split in half and half again and every road goes
everywhere at once with you
Every time I see your face it’s like the girl I love’s replaced with someone new

You astonish me
I mean you knock me on my heels
Then a sparrow falls or someone calls and
I can’t tell what’s real

What’s it like for you to be
The soul of mutability
How do you decide which to apply
Variations on a theme

Is it too much to ask
Do I call you to task
Which lover stayed?
Who are you today?
