What’s It All About?
Written for Kris Shine after he broke up with (or did she break up with him?) a long-time girlfriend. Either way, it was a tough thing for him… I had the feeling he was torn between feeling released and feeling lost.
So this song… which ironically, he never heard. Further irony… the girlfriend in question ended up with me some six years later. See “A Day of Mornings” for how that turned out…
The droning guitar line that runs up and down the high strings owes a little to REM’s “Seven Chinese Brothers” and U2’s “The Electric Co.,” even if it doesn’t sound much like either one.
Recorded in a giant coffeehouse in Long Beach, California in the nineties.
Lyrics:
Breathe out a sigh
It’ll let you let go
Free yourself inside
All while you tell yourself
There’s no making yourself whole
Turning of the tide
And you feel like you’ve been
Stranded on the rock
Took you long enough
Learning how to swim and now she
Wants you to walk
But maybe you wanted to fly
You’ve always wanted to fly
Maybe now’s the time to
Teach yourself
Take to the sky
All those other lives
You shaped yourself to
Just to see a smile
How much of it really spoke of you
Or was it all a lie?
Now you’ve got the time
Get to know yourself
Forget the unknown why
All around is sky
Like an invitation
Allowing you to try
Haven’t you wanted to fly
I know you wanted to fly
I can see you
Against the sun up in the sky
