What’s It All About?

This is song is an admission of wrongdoing… it’s about the collateral damage that can result from making decisions when you don’t know your own heart. It’s the apology I never got to give in person.

There’s an edge of defiance, and a touch of anger, in the lyrics and tone of this song. I wasn’t aware of it when I wrote it. Looking back, I think it stems from the thought that it takes two people to enter into an ill-advised contract. That, and the fact that I almost certainly needed to shield myself from my own bad behavior.

The song was played in Running Erin, near the end of my time with that band. I don’t believe there’s a full-band version in my possession, if one exists at all. The version presented here is from an album of acoustic songs I put together in 2004 called “Test Pressing,” featuring me singing and playing acoustic guitar, live direct to the hard disk. There are no overdubs or effects added.

Lyrics:

“A Day Of Mornings” by Matthew Wayne Selznick

You say
A day of mornings
Is not enough to erase tonight
I say
The world is turning
And I don’t see things as you might

No way
To get through to you
You won’t listen, that’s your right
Foul play
At least in your view
You’re the blind spot in my eyes

Okay, I
Made another one of my big
Mistakes
You’re the one who pays when I make it right

What do I say
When you stand before me?
How much truth is too much knife?
I go away
And it’s too easy
You’re left standing with your life
