What’s It All About?

This is the fourth track from my album, “Anyman: The John Smith E.P.” This project was a collaborative effort between myself and author J.C. Hutchins and part of the campaign to promote the publication of J.C.’s novel, “7th Son: Descent.” The idea was that each track of the record would be presented as if it was written and performed by John Smith, one of the characters in the book.

For this song, J.C. Hutchins suggested that the song was either about “a guy who’s asking a friend / lover to perform something major — a big favor — that is deeply personal” or “it’s a song about fucking.”

I decided to mix the two ideas. It is, indeed, an invitation to do the nasty… but there’s an underlying motivation on the part of the singer — he needs rescuing from a bad situation that’s probably of his own making. He’s running from one unmade bed to another, counting on desperate charm to carry him along.

While I don’t flatter myself to be the Casanova John Smith might be, I can certainly relate to the idea that rapid, serial monogamy — jumping headlong from one relationship to the next with little in-between time — can help a guy avoid any difficult soul searching or prickly emotional growth. Been that, done that… so it made “Do This For Me” pretty easy to write.
