What’s It All About?
This is the second track from my album, “Anyman: The John Smith E.P.” This project was a collaborative effort between myself and author J.C. Hutchins and part of the campaign to promote the publication of J.C.’s novel, “7th Son: Descent.” The idea was that each track of the record would be presented as if it was written and performed by John Smith, one of the characters in the book.
For this song, J.C. Hutchins explained he was looking for a metaphorical meaning for Rockefeller Center that centered around the idea of the statue of Prometheus, the fire-stealer, there. Rockefeller Center was not so much a destination as it was the representation of getting one’s fire — finding the inspiration and truth in one’s life.
I love that idea. As the song was developing, I ended up adding an element of conflict — someone has to keep John Smith from his Rockefeller Center! True to John’s (my?) nature, that someone would be both a woman and his own struggle between art and loneliness. The song became something John might have sung to someone who, just by being together, was keeping him off the path to his dreams. It’s part apology, part elegy and part defiant declaration.
