Five Minute Memoir

Five Minute Memoir presents anecdotes, recollections, confessions, stories, and other formative moments from listeners of the podcast.

It’s our lives, five minutes at a time.

Tell Your Story

Your story could be among the first. Help launch Five Minute Memoir by contributing a brief (no more than five minutes), true, formative anecdote from your own life story.

You’ll receive full credit and attribution, including a link to your website, book, product, company, or “home base” online if you have one.

You retain copyright for your submission. By submitting your audio file, you’re granting me a license to use the story for the podcast and related media (see the Terms of Use for more information).

Tips for Telling Your Story

You don’t need fancy equipment or software to record your story. You can even use the voice recorder on your phone (24bit, 48kHz, and save the file in .wav format).

Don’t introduce yourself or provide any biographical information in the recording. I’ll handle that in the episode itself. All you need to do is tell your story.

Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted and tell your true story as if you were talking to a good friend. In fact, if it helps, find a friend to actually tell it to, and record that! Make sure they keep quiet, though! I only want your voice on the recording.

If it helps to write it down first, make sure your piece is under 650 words, which will help keep your recording under five minutes.

Listen to the result. Trust me, it doesn’t have to be perfect, and don’t worry about how you sound. Very few people love the sound of their own voice; especially recorded. So long as you’re satisfied with the story, that’s what’s most important.

Name your audio file like this:

Finally, submit your .wav file using the form on this page.

The Return of an Original

Five Minute Memoir originally debuted in late 2006 and existed through 2007, when podcasting was just a few years old and folks had limited access to personal and portable audio recording devices. It was a bit ahead of its time!

You can listen to all those original episodes courtesy of the Internet Archive.
